Bromeliads in containers will do well on shaded patios or under trees with broad canopies that allow dappled light through. Likes to be protected from frost. 

In general, it's enough to water your bromeliad through the soil weekly during the growing season and reduce watering during the winter rest period. If you centrally water your bromeliad (by filling up the cup and leaf axils with water), then make sure to flush these out every so often with fresh water to prevent stagnation and remove any built-up salts. Bromeliads also like to be misted. Be aware that containers will also dry out faster outdoors. When the potting medium is dry a few inches down, thoroughly soak the pot and allow it to drain well.
